The Tonkawa City Council said ‘no’ to a proposed tobacco-free plan for the city.
The ordinance would have made all city-owned property, including city parks, tobacco free. City streets, sidewalks and alleyways would have been exempt.
The council did pass a related ordinance. It called for the prevention of youth access to tobacco and vapor products.
If the tobacco free ordinance HAD passed, the city could have applied for up to $20,000 in grant money through the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust. Monies from the Trust are intended for ‘good health’ projects, such as walking trails.
The city can look at the issue again beginning with the next fiscal year.
