A man with a foreign dialect has contacted two local hotels and told them the utilities would be cut off to their businesses in 30 minutes if they weren’t paid. The caller gave a telephone number to contact to pay and assured them would be the only warning.

The Ponca City Utility Authority does not do business this way. A cut off notice is left on the property days before utilities are disconnected so customers can contact the office to make payment arrangements.

At a recent community event, there was a problem with a drawing for a major door prize.

A misunderstanding led the event organizers to redraw for this door prize, and Sergeant Rob Hughes of the Ponca City Police Department was the winner of the redraw.

When it was discovered that there had been a misunderstanding, Officer Hughes immediately said the prize should go to the original winner.

Chief Don Bohon said he wanted to publicly commend Rob for being a “stand up” guy.

This prize was very valuable and many people probably would not have done what Rob did.

A film about Jim Thorpe whom many regarded as the world’s greatest athlete, is in progress, and Hollywood actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie is one of its producers. Sterlin Harjo, who grew up in Holdenville, is a scriptwriter for the biopic. Its release date hasn’t been announced, and its name isn’t official, though its website calls it “Bright Path: The Jim Thorpe Story.” Martin Sensmeier, an Alaskan Native actor, will star as Thorpe in the upcoming biopic.

Thorpe resided with his first wife, Iva, and their children at the historical site, now called Jim Thorpe Home. The gray-frame home where he lived in Yale is now a museum dedicated to him. However, according to his Great Grandaughter, Krystyn Thomas and the President of the Jim Thorpe Home, Linda Frick, the Oklahoma Historical Society might shut down the home because of inadequate funding.  Both women are hoping the movie will generate interest in an Oklahoman who many considered the worlds greatest athlete during his life.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to increase safety patrols on Oklahoma lakes after a string of recreational drownings.

Officials plan to encourage the use of personal flotation device after the drowning deaths of 11 people in Oklahoma lakes since May.

Officials said consistent life jacket use could reduce drownings by 90 percent.

Two drownings have been recorded at Lake Eufaula in northeastern Oklahoma during the past week, including a man who drowned Tuesday evening and a 4-year-old boy who drowned Thursday morning.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported an 18-year-old man drowned Friday in Frederick Lake in southwestern Oklahoma.
