Oklahomans who supported legalization of medical marijuana may be facing a potentially thorny issue. Those who plan to apply for a medical marijuana license when they become available may have to choose between the relief cannabis could bring and owning a gun.
It’s a potentially thorny issue in a state where up to 50 percent of the population has been estimated to own a gun.
Oklahoma, is the most recent state to legalize marijuana for medical purposes. The federal government still classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug along with narcotics like heroin, LSD and cocaine.
Federal law prohibits any person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance from shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition.
In an open letter to gun owners that was issued in 2011, the ATF warned that holding a medical marijuana license should be considered proof that the holder is a user of marijuana.
