BLACKWELL – Due to the ongoing need, the Kay County Health Department will offer an additional tetanus immunization clinic for Kay County residents that did come in contact with floodwaters. A special clinic will be held today from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Event Center at 800 South Main In Blackwell. There will be no fee assessed.
According to the CDC, floodwaters can contain different health hazards. This includes:
- Downed power lines
- Human and livestock waste
- Raw sewage
- Household, industrial and medical wastes
- Wild or stray animals such as rodents and snakes
Exposure to contaminated floodwater can cause:
- Wound infections
- Skin rash
- Gastrointestinal illness
- Tetanus
- Leptospirosis (not common)
