TONKAWA  – The historic flooding in the month of May left damage to the Tonkawa Animal Shelter.

Located south of the Salt Fork Arkansas River, the Tonkawa Animal Shelter flooded three times in the last month, with the worst being on May 20th. Dogs and cats that were originally in the shelter were moved to the Tonkawa Parks and Rec building before taken in by nearby Blackwell Animal Shelter.

The animal’s former home was left in bad shape with mud everywhere, filling up dog cages and also ruining blankets in cat houses. All three will be eventually torn down. According to KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City, Suzanne Burns of the Tonkawa Animal Shelter said a lady in Tonkawa was generous and donated 9 beds for each dog and now the beds are gone.

Officials say supply items such as dog and cat foods, cat litter, dog beds, bowls and cleaning supplies will be hard to replace. While the cleaning, bleaching, and rebuilding is underway, officials say the services provided at the shelter are really what’s missing.

The facility should be likely to get back into in less than two weeks if the rain can hold off.

Officials plan to rebuild one cat house 5 feet off the ground so they will have a safe place the next time the river floods.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up for anyone who would like to help the Tonkawa Animal Shelter: https://www.gofundme.com/tonkawa-animal-shelter?fbclid=IwAR0Ao9Gtd_wFRW1BQFN5uxPCMgwC9GtvoHzlrAjqn-QK6kQomdiUTzal0V8
