Wednesday Morning River Flooding Update

KAY COUNTY – Recent heavy rainfall brought major flooding to not only streets, but local rivers.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey Team, the Chikaskia River at Blackwell crested at 34.35 feet late Tuesday evening. The river is now falling back down and is expected to be below flood stage during the day on Thursday. As of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, the Chikaskia River was at 33.9 feet.

Major flooding is occurring with the Salt Fork Arkansas River at Tonkawa. The Salt Fork Arkansas River was reported at 26.5 feet early Wednesday, and will continue rising and crest near 26.7 feet early Wednesday afternoon. The Salt Fork Arkansas River will fall below flood stage early Saturday afternoon. Farmlands and oilfields in the area are experiencing flooding. US-77 from southern edge of Tonkawa to State Highway 156 is closed, as well as highway 156 between Marland and Ponca City. Water was even approaching I-35 south of Highway 60.
